What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery can remove excess fat and sagging skin from the upper and lower eyelids, giving you a youthful and rejuvenated appearance. In some patients, they experience better eyesight after the hanging skin is removed. While eyelid surgery does not help with dark circles under the eyes, facial wrinkles, or other facial issues, eyelid surgery can typically be performed in conjunction with other treatments that will address these areas. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kevin Hanz is happy to meet with you at Kevin R. Hanz, M.D. Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in Dallas, TX to discuss your goals and concerns with eyelid surgery.

Can I Get Eyelid Surgery?

Most people that get eyelid surgery are over 35 years old; however, younger people may qualify if they find themselves in a position that they need eyelid surgery. Those with droopy upper or lower eyelids may want eyelid surgery to give themselves a more youthful appearance or enhance their eyesight if their sagging eyelids interfere with their sight. You should be in good health and have realistic expectations before getting eyelid surgery. If you are wondering if you qualify for eyelid surgery, schedule an appointment with Dallas, TX board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kevin Hanz at Kevin R. Hanz, M.D. Aesthetic Plastic Surgery today.

What Will Happen During My Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery is typically performed as an outpatient surgery using local or general anesthesia. Some patients consider having other procedures done to the face, neck, eyebrows, and forehead at the same time. Dr. Hanz will typically work on the upper eyelids first if both the upper and lower eyelids are getting work done. He will cut along the natural folds of the eyelids to reduce scarring. From there, he will remove the excess fat and skin causing the drooping or sagging eyelids. Lower eyelid surgery is similar, although Dr. Hanz will work either along the inside of your lower eyelid or along the eyelash line. Once complete, Dr. Hanz will use very small stitches to close the cuts and scarring should be very minimal if visible at all.

What is Eyelid Surgery Recovery Like?

After your eyelid surgery, your eyelids will be swollen and it's somewhat common to experience bruising; however, these should subside within a few weeks. A week after your procedure, your stitches will be removed. You should plan to stay home from work for at least a few days following your procedure. Some people may experience dry eyes, but that shouldn't last more than a few weeks. Many patients may want to prepare their homes ahead of time for their recovery. Some handy items to have for your recovery are:

  • Ice cubes or ice packs
  • Gauze pads
  • Eye drops
  • Washcloths
  • Painkillers

Frequently Asked Questions about Eyelid Surgery

How much will my eyelid surgery cost?
The cost of your eyelid surgery will depend on what you're having done and if you will be receiving any other procedures in addition to your eyebrow surgery. The most important thing to consider is making sure you use a skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Hanz, rather than the cheapest surgeon you can find. In the event that a vision test states your vision is being impaired by your drooping eyelids, insurance may cover the cost of your eyelid surgery. Dr. Hanz or someone from his team can help you navigate the costs of the surgery, whether you may qualify for insurance coverage, or set up a payment plan or low-interest financing.

Will I have bruising and swelling?
Many people will experience some bruising and swelling so you should not be concerned if you experience this. It should subside within about two weeks. Eyelids are very sensitive so you will likely have some pain as well. Dr. Hanz can give you some tips and guidelines to reduce pain and swelling.

When will I see my final results?
You should begin to see your results within about two months following your surgery. Upper eyelid surgery results will typically last for about 5 – 7 years while results from a lower eyelid surgery typically should not need to be repeated.

Can I wear makeup?
Most patients will be well enough to start wearing makeup two weeks after their surgery. Patients should be aware that if they choose to wear makeup any earlier than that, they may find their makeup "tattoos" into their incisions.

Can I wear contacts?
Vision is not affected so you should not expect that you will have better vision. However, if you wear contacts, you will want to have a pair of glasses handy because you will not be able to wear your contacts for two weeks after your surgery. Your eyes may be dry after your surgery so you may find yourself needing to use eyedrops.
