Liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure with you under general anesthesia. A punch-hole incision is placed in your skin and a special tool called a cannula will be inserted to loosen the fatty tissue that is being removed. Depending on the number of areas receiving treatment, your procedure could take 1 – 3 hours.

Once complete, Dr. Hanz will close the incision and you will be taken to the post-op recovery area. In the dedicated recovery area, your post-op team will assist you in managing any pain and teach you how to look after your incisions until you are learned for discharge.

You may need to stay at home for recovery from your liposuction surgery for 1 – 3 weeks based on the number and size of treated areas. Stitches will be removed 7 – 10 days after surgery. Keep in mind that it is typical to see swelling and bruising for 1 – 2 weeks.

Even when you return to work, you will still be in recovery so you need to take it easy. To build up your strength, stick to light workouts and go for walks as approved by Dr. Hanz.

Remember, you may see some improvements after six weeks, but it will take 6 – 10 months until your new body contour and shape are attained and your goal visible.

While liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in your body, you can still lose and gain weight. Dr. Hanz suggests that you be at or close to your healthy weight prior to liposuction. Afterward, it is best to stay within 5 – 10 pounds of your post-surgical weight.
