What are Neurotoxins?

While we all may wish we could look young forever, our bodies will all inevitably begin to show signs of aging. Neurotoxins are a modern way to combat this issue and make your skin look as tight and soft as ever. They utilize botulinum toxin type A in order to temporarily paralyze the muscles in the targeted area for cosmetic effect. Typically, these injections can reduce the visibility of wrinkles and fine lines found on the face. At Kevin R. Hanz, M.D. Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in Dallas, TX, we're committed to providing the results of your dreams. Schedule a consultation today to discuss your options regarding neurotoxins.

Are Neurotoxins Right for Me?

Neurotoxin injections are great for men and women who hope to nonsurgically diminish and soften the look of any wrinkles, lines, and moderate folds on their upper face. They can be used as an anti-aging treatment, preventing wrinkles that have not yet formed. Neurotoxins are a great nonsurgical treatment if you have obvious forehead wrinkles or frown lines between the brows. It could also be a solution for Crow's feet around the eyes. If you experience more severe and deeper lines, a combination of a neurotoxin and filler may be more suitable. Keep in mind, if you are older with severe wrinkles, you may be a candidate for a facelift, which offers a more impactful result and longer-lasting results.

Types of Neurotoxins

There are countless types of neurotoxins. However, at Kevin R. Hanz, M.D. Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, we focus on two: BOTOX® and Jeuveau®.

BOTOX is the original neurotoxin to be approved by the FDA for cosmetic use. It has continued to be the most popular treatment option due to its effectiveness, low molecular weight, and safety.

Jeuveau is a relatively new addition to the world of neurotoxins, becoming FDA approved in February 2019. Despite its age, it has quickly become a popular option for numerous patients around the world.

What to Expect After Neurotoxins

Following your injection of BOTOX or Jeuveau, you should be able to get back to your daily activities, although strenuous activities, like exercise, should be postponed for at least 24 hours. You will be asked to sleep upright for at least one night and to not touch your face, as this can accidentally spread the neurotoxin to other areas of your face. The injected sections of the face may be slightly red, swollen, or bruised for a few days, but you should not have any serious or lasting side effects. In most cases, it takes around 5 – 7 days before the full effects of the injection are visible. The results generally last 3 – 4 months. Speak with Dr. Hanz to decide when you should make a follow-up appointment to refresh your results.

Neurotoxin FAQ

How many neurotoxin treatments will I likely need?

The number of injections given will vary based on individual goals and the extent of your facial wrinkles and lines. Dr. Hanz can recommend the appropriate number of BOTOX units based on your aesthetic desires and whether you wish to treat the Crow's feet, brow area, or forehead. To prolong your aesthetic outcomes, our practitioners could recommend scheduling BOTOX every 3 – 4 months at Kevin R. Hanz, M.D. Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Can I combine neurotoxins with additional aesthetic procedures?

Neurotoxins pair well with other solutions at Kevin R. Hanz, M.D. Aesthetic Plastic Surgery for patients who prefer to minimize aging concerns. If you experience more extensive and pronounced facial lines, we may recommend administering a filler to help you achieve smoother outcomes. To further improve a youthful, radiant appearance, Dr. Hanz could perform additional complementary treatments, like PRP with microneedling or facials.

What's the difference between dermal fillers and wrinkle reducers?

Even though wrinkle relaxers, such as BOTOX, are used to smooth facial creases by temporarily freezing your muscle movements, fillers are a distinct collection of cosmetic formulations that increase volume in the face. Fillers are designed to plump gaunt-looking areas and soften static wrinkles. Dr. Hanz can decide if you could be a good candidate for a dermal filler (such as Restylane® or JUVÉDERM®) to further enhance your BOTOX results.
